Book Review – What would MacGyver? by Brendan Vaughan
Angus MacGyver was a true engineer, he could take a clip, gum, and match with a stick and prevent the construction of a building to explode. If there is some truth in this is debatable, but the idea is still entertaining. The idea that a person can convert a situation around quickly with just the basics, the author Brendan Vaughan wrote the book entitled "What Would MacGyver? Stories True Genius impromptu everyday life. "
This book does not tell the common people use everyday items to save lives and prevent explosions, but there are some pretty neat examples of engineering that solve basic problems. There are between 40 and 45 examples of people solving tasks through materials basic in this book divided into six different categories. The first category is titled, "The expectation on the trunk." The first story talks about a young woman named Cynthia that Morse was the movement and driving through Texas, when she went off the road due to ice, his truck got stuck in the ice. It had no highway deicing salt or in your vehicle, so it uses only thing he could: Chex Mix. To his surprise and ingenuity, always Chex mix only enough to drive his truck to move and move again. The chapter contains several other vehicles and driving situations where the common elements found in a used car or truck to save the day.
The second section is titled "Home Improvement". In this section, people use common elements of the house to fix broken appliances or fix simple problems that arise around the house. An example of this category has been written by Katherine Sharpe whose friend Mary had a serious case of asthma recurring. Mary had always gone to the emergency room to treat shortness of breath and had an inhaler worked only sometimes. Your inhaler is more effective when using a spacer of Mary, or a space between the inhaler and the mouth of Mary for the steam to diffuse before inhaling it. When Mary had another seizure and could not find your extender, Katherine found a bottle of water were used to work on it. Removed cover and cut an "x" on the side of the bottle to enter the inhaler. Mary used the bottle of water in the separator and was able to breathe again. Not only Katherine help her breathe friend, may have saved lives that day.
The third section is called "The Chapter on the road." The story of Paul Padial opens this chapter, and shows the true spirit of what can be done with MacGyver staples. Paul was known to escape the big city with friends and field in the woods with beer and guitars. After a night of drinking, Paul and friends needed to heat coffee and work on their hangovers. However, the boys had no a coffee machine or a filter, leaving to carry out their own. The filter was created from one of Paul's socks. He washed and dried by the fire, and joined to a layer suspension was out there. Put ground coffee in the sock and poured water on the sock that had been heated by fire, and that filtered through the half was fresh, hot coffee. His idea was simple but did the job.
The fourth category is called "Complications Love Lust, and others. "One of the most interesting stories in this category is told by Tiffany Funk who was studying abroad in Spain. She met a good rugby player who was interested in just in time to leave the country. To his surprise, he returned one day and asked her visit. Tiffany said yes, and and came to his door, closing at the foot Tiffany broke. Ninety seconds or less to fix the problem and knowing that it was the skirt that she really wanted use, I needed a quick solution. He grabbed a pair of earrings and took the brackets off. After the nails pierced through her skirt and put the media in order to maintain both sides of the zipper together. He put a long shirt on outstanding man and his friend did not notice. Tiffany showed a great ability to think quickly, as MacGyver.
The fifth category is called "problems with the authorities. One of the funniest of the six stories in this category is told by Evan Rothman. Evan was extremely drunk one night in a bar, and finally was sent out to try to fight a mountain gorilla-of-a-man. He was tottering down the street when he stumbled with a fire hydrant and hit his head on the concrete floor. Blood was flowing everywhere after his accident because of a gash on his head. Normal be taken to the hospital, but one of the people around him had a great idea, make some coffee! Do not even drink coffee, but coffee grounds rubbed in court to stop the bleeding. it is a great coffee coagulant and stopped the bleeding quickly. Evan was lucky enough to have the strangers who had the knowledge to walk coffee rub on a bleeding cut.
The last section is called "At work" and is responsible for acts of ingenuity out at work site. One of the best entries are written by AJ Jacobs, author of bestseller "He knows everything." In this book, Jacobs read the entire encyclopedia on to become extremely smart and make an appearance on a popular TV trivia. However, while out promoting his books and making appearances, he finds that people Question incredibly difficult trivia questions that he can not respond. Was a way to avoid answering certain questions, making it a kind of "MacGyver social. "Instead of saying he does not know the answer, which provides an alternative answer on the same topic at the same time avoiding the answer. He uses his intelligence and brain instead of physical objects lying around to solve any problem while appearances.
In general, "What would MacGyver?" It is a book full of interesting stories every day people make the best out of their problem situations. While some of the stories are not very interesting and impressive and none of the stories are at the level of what Angus MacGyver could do, still have 15-20 stories are very interesting and worth reading the book. I give this book 3.5 out of 5.
